Summer Camp Resolutions

More SEO is coming, but I thought it’d be a good idea to take a break and focus on the new year.

For camp professionals, January 1 isn’t the start of a new year – it’s the start of crunch time. It’s the signal that camp is right around the corner, and that registration, hiring, and planning should be well underway. For most people, January is the time to reflect and to set goals, but too often, camp professionals are so deep in the throes of things to do the same.

Don’t fall into that trap! Instead, take some time to think about to think about 2016 and get ready for 2017.

Reflect.

Reflection is something you should have done at the end of the summer, but did you do it? Did you take in your feedback then take time to sit alone and really think about what it all meant? If not, now’s the time.

In January, you still have enough time to figure out the kinks and think of solutions before things get too crazy. Don’t miss this opportunity.

Think Beyond Camp.

As camp directors, we have camp on our brain a LOT. We think about our staff, our programs, our campers, and everything else, so sometimes we throw ourselves to the wayside.

Use the start of 2017 to think beyond camp and to think about yourself – your plans, your ideas, and your goals. What do you want to accomplish this year, in camp and outside of camp?

Set Goals.

Are you setting goals each year for your camp? If not, you should be! Again, this may not be the start of the camp year, but it’s not too late to figure out a direction for your camp.

Think about what you want to see your camp do this year, and create action items to make sure that happens. Make sure your goals are SMART, and make sure you measure them along the way to track your progress.

A few ideas for camp-related goals are:

  • Increase camper retention rate by _______ percent.
  • Increase staff retention rate by ______ percent.
  • Raise $________ for ________.
  • Increase camp attendance by _______ percent.
  • Receive feedback from ______ parents/campers/staff members.
  • Improve Google rank from ____ to _____.

Do you have any great camp-related goals to share? If so, leave them in the comments.

Happy New Year, and happy planning!
